Blocks

Below are some tips for performing some of the blocks you use, using the correct arms to perform the blocks is essential when perfecting techniques and executing power.

Inner Forearm Block - An Palmok Maki

Place the blocking arm underneath the reaction arm with both palms facing downwards, bring the blocking arm across the body and twist the blocking arm as the arm nears the final blocking position, at the same time pulling the reaction arm back to the hip with a twist. The block should finish with the fist in front of the shoulder, the arm bent at 90 degrees blocking with the inner forearm.

Lower Section Block - Najunde Maki

Place the blocking arm on top of the reaction arm with the palm facing upwards, the reaction arm has the palm facing downwards. Bring the blocking arm down to its blocking position, twisting as the arm nears it's final blocking position, at the same time pulling the reaction arm back to the hip with a twist. The block should finish in front of the leg with the arm slightly bent - don't bend the wrist.

Outer Forearm Block - Bakkat Palmok Maki

Place the blocking arm on top of the reaction arm with the palm facing upwards, the reaction arm has the palm facing downwards. Bring the blocking arm across the body to its blocking position, twisting as the arm nears it's final blocking position, at the same time pulling the reaction arm back to the hip with a twist. The block should finish with the fist in front of the shoulder with the palm facing away from your body, and the arm bent at 90 degrees blocking with the outer forearm.

Rising Block - Chookyo Maki
Place the blocking arm on top of the reaction arm with the palm facing upwards, the reaction arm has the palm facing downwards. Take the blocking arm up to its blocking position, twisting as the arm nears it's final blocking position, at the same time pulling the reaction arm back to the hip with a twist. The block should finish above the head in an outer forearm position, preventing a downwards attack to the head.
